Dr. Scanderbeg is a clinical medical physicist with a primary focus on brachytherapy. He currently serves as the Associate Physics Division Director in charge of Brachytherapy and Regulatory Affairs as well as the Technology Service Chief for Brachytherapy. He oversees all brachytherapy treatment options from high dose rate afterloading procedures to low dose rate permanent and temporary implants. Diseases treated with brachytherapy at UC San Diego include gynecological malignancies, breast cancer, prostate cancer, sarcomas, brain tumors, and melanomas.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Scanderbeg has research interests ranging from novel, custom brachytherapy treatments and devices, to deformable image registration and dose accumulation, 3D printing for medical applications, and educational methods and platforms. He enjoys instructing residents and students and also educational outreach. Dr. Scanderbeg has produced several instructional videos on brachytherapy treatment planning that are freely available and is working on more videos focused on assisting programs in low and middle income countries.
Dr. Scanderbeg serves on multiple committees at the University as well as with local, national and international organizations. Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors, swimming, cycling, and running. He is also a level 2 US Masters Swimming certified coach and enjoys helping others achieve their athletic goals.
